Romero Britto

Born : 1963Documented citizenships : Brazil

Romero Britto, born in Recife in 1963, developed a self-taught drawing and painting practice from an early age, using materials including newspaper and cardboard. A trip to Paris in 1983 introduced him to works by Matisse and Picasso. Later based in Miami, he built a career encompassing painting, sculpture, editions and commercial collaborations.

His visual vocabulary combines bright colours, strong outlines and surfaces divided into decorative patterns. References to Cubism and Pop art support a deliberately accessible imagery centred on joy and optimism. His participation in the Absolut Art campaign contributed to his international visibility. Public art interventions and projects with brands extend this intention to circulate his images beyond galleries and make them part of everyday surroundings.

This profile brings together identity references for Romero Britto and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
