Peter Burnitz connected the landscape around Frankfurt with French approaches associated with Barbizon. After studying law, he lived in Paris before returning to his native city in 1857; the Taunus area then supplied his motifs. His Swiss sketchbook of 1846, in the Städel, already records close observation: mountains and villages in pencil, sometimes touched with blue or grey.
Zerstörtes Haus, a small oil on cardboard dated around 1851–1857 in the same museum, takes a ruined building as its subject. French Landscape with a Cow, held by the Germanisches Nationalmuseum on loan from Nuremberg's municipal art collections, favours dark tones and thick paint. Comparing the travel drawings with these paintings reveals several ways of constructing landscape: recording outlines, arranging masses and modulating atmosphere within pictorial space.
This profile brings together identity references for Peter Burnitz and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
