Pietro Antonio Rotari (1707–1762), born in Verona, belonged to a generation of Italian painters whose careers unfolded at several European courts. Trained by Antonio Balestra, he later worked for Maria Theresa in Vienna and then in Dresden. In 1756 he became court painter in Saint Petersburg, where he remained until his death.
Alongside religious and mythological subjects, he developed bust-length and half-length studies of female figures. Costumes, tilted heads and differentiated expressions create a repertoire of characters rather than simply a series of individual portraits. With workshop assistance, he produced numerous such images for Russian imperial residences, notably Peterhof. Rotari’s career thus demonstrates the European circulation of Rococo taste and Italian pictorial models among different courtly settings.
This profile brings together identity references for Pietro Rotari and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
