Lucas van Uden

Born : 1595Died : 1672

Lucas van Uden was born in Antwerp in 1595 and spent most of his career there before his death in 1672. Probably trained by his father Artus, he joined the painters’ guild in 1626–1627. A landscape painter, draughtsman and etcher, he extended the traditions of Brueghel and Momper while also responding to Rubens.

His Study of Trees from the 1640s, held in Washington, combines brown ink, grey wash and yellow and white chalk over graphite. This varied technique differs from his landscapes painted on wooden panels. In the Prado’s Peasants’ Meal, around 1660, David Teniers supplied the figures within Van Uden’s landscape. In his landscapes, trees in the foreground lead towards fields and distant villages, organising the successive spaces within the image.

This profile brings together identity references for Lucas van Uden and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
