The Baden painter, draughtsman and printmaker Emil Lugo developed a body of work in which landscape occupies a central place, ranging from the surroundings of Freiburg im Breisgau to the Black Forest, the mountains of Bavaria and Lake Chiem. Born in Stockach in 1840 and died in Munich in 1902, he began his training in 1856 at the Karlsruhe Academy of Fine Arts, under the landscape painter Johann Wilhelm Schirmer. There he met Hans Thoma, with whom he maintained a lasting friendship.
After a stay in Dresden and Weimar in 1869, where he met Friedrich Preller the Elder, Lugo stayed in Rome from 1871 to 1873, then returned there in 1876 with Thoma and Miss Kappler. Based in Freiburg im Breisgau from 1875, he painted the landscapes of the surrounding area and the Black Forest. In 1888, together with his brother Karl, he accompanied the family of the writer Wilhelm Jensen to Munich, then travelled again with Jensen in Italy, from 1892 to 1894 and in 1901.
His work includes landscape paintings, drawings and prints, devoted in particular to the Black Forest, the mountains of Bavaria and Lake Chiem, as well as to imaginary landscapes. This practice of drawing is also evident in his contribution to Jensen’s book Der Schwarzwald, published in 1890, for which he produced fifty illustrations alongside Wilhelm Hasemann, Max Roman and Victor Roman. At Villa Jensen, he also created the dining-room decoration around an ideal Neapolitan landscape.
Most of the drawings he left behind are held in the graphic art collection of the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe, which devoted an exhibition to him in spring 2003. His career is the subject of a monograph by Joseph August Beringer, published in Karlsruhe in 1912 and again in 1925.
