Born in 1985, Richard Mudariki is a full-time painter who lives and works in Cape Town, South Africa. His contemporary paintings contain social commentary on various African issues. He studied painting with Allen Kupeta in Chitungwiza, then with Helen Lieros and Greg Shaw at Gallery Delta in Harare. He also holds a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in archaeology, cultural heritage and museum studies. His exhibitions have taken him to Cape Town and Johannesburg, as well as Berlin, London, Miami, New York and Harare.
The New Church, made in 2014, offers a concrete example of his work: this oil painting on canvas unfolds in three parts and measures 89 × 220 cm. The sale notice states that it is inspired by the song of the same name, released in 1982 by the band Lords of the New Church.
