Georges Noël builds his painting on a support combining pure pigments, sand and glue, whose surface can be raw, grainy or velvety. In his “Palimpsests”, the layering and erasure of materials and signs bring forth layers of memory, emotion and meaning. Drawing and automatic writing fuel his interest, even as he remains little drawn to Surrealism. Alongside painting, he also practises sculpture and produces numerous prints, mainly woodcuts.
Born in Béziers in 1924, he grew up in Pau. After studying engineering and painting, he worked for nine years as a design draughtsman at Turboméca in Pau. In 1956, he moved to Paris to devote himself entirely to painting. Galerie Paul Facchetti represented him from 1957 to 1968. In 1964, he took part in documenta 3 in Kassel.
In 1968, Noël moved to New York, where he was represented by Pace Gallery and Gallery Arnold Herstand. During this American period, his work became more structured and architectonic. After returning to France in 1983, he prepared an exhibition at Sénanque Abbey. In 1985, a retrospective of his work was presented at the Centre national des arts plastiques in Paris.
The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Pau presented an exhibition of his work in 2006; it owns two works by the artist. In 2015, the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris devoted an exhibition to him on the occasion of a major purchase and a donation. In 2021–2022, Galerie Dutko in Paris showed a retrospective selection of his paintings. His works are also held in private and public collections.
