Antonino Leto, also known as Antonio, came from Monreale and trained in Palermo with Luigi Barba and Luigi Lojacono. In Naples he approached Giuseppe De Nittis and the School of Resina. Supported by the Florio family, he received an artistic pension in 1875 and spent 1876–1878 in Florence, where he encountered the Macchiaioli.
His paintings explore coastal landscapes and the work of their inhabitants. Case bianche, grande marina di Capri, painted in 1882 and held by Palermo’s Galleria d’Arte Moderna, depicts the island to which he withdrew during the 1880s. The Rope Makers of Torre del Greco, dated 1883, and Tuna Fishing in Sicily, dated 1884, focus on specific craft and maritime occupations. These subjects connect his landscape practice with the working life of southern Italian shores.
This profile brings together identity references for Antonino Leto and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
