Stjepan Vecenaj

Documented citizenships : Croatia

The Croatian painter Stjepan Večenaj (1928–2000) came from Gola and began painting in 1954, receiving his earliest guidance from his brother Ivan. His first solo exhibition took place in his home village in 1957. Further exhibitions in Croatia and abroad followed during the 1960s. His work belongs to the context of naive art in the Podravina region, with villages and winter scenes among his documented subjects. He used different supports, including glass and canvas, and also produced screenprints. Moving between these techniques, he developed a career that combined a local grounding with opportunities to show his work internationally. Gola remained an important point of reference within that wider exhibition history.

This profile brings together identity references for Stjepan Vecenaj and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
