Born in Sneek in 1858 and died in Paris in 1908, Siebe Johannes ten Cate developed a body of work in which landscapes and urban views often appear in rain or snow. This preference for scenes captured in rainy or snowy atmospheres is the most clearly documented characteristic of his painting. In 1876, he decided to enrol at the Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague; a few years later, he continued his studies in Antwerp. His travels also took him to several European countries, including Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and Germany, as well as to Algeria and Egypt. Paris remained his address: his residence is listed as 65, rue de Malte.
The titles of works retained among the examples presented by the foundation — La Meuse, Luzern, Bateaux près de Notre Dame and Boulogne-sur-mer — evoke a range of places, without limiting his subject to a single territory; painting and pastel are the media mentioned. According to the foundation, art dealers Durand-Ruel and Ambroise Vollard exhibited his works in their galleries. His paintings and pastels were also shown at the Salon d’Automne, alongside works by Jean-Baptiste Corot. The same source reports that the Louvre acquired four of his paintings and that the Musée Carnavalet bought around twenty.
The foundation also reports his friendships with Alfred Sisley, Camille Pissarro and Vincent van Gogh, as well as the hospitality he offered Kees van Dongen upon his arrival in Paris. After his death, his studio was sold at auction and, according to the foundation, his name subsequently fell into oblivion. In 2012, the Fries Scheepvaart Museum in Sneek organised an exhibition dedicated to the artist.
