Robert Brandy

Born : 1946Documented citizenships : Luxembourg

Robert Brandy places the material nature of painting at the centre of his work. His studies in Aix-en-Provence introduced him to Supports/Surfaces: objects, canvas and colour became active components of the artwork. Returning to Luxembourg, he chose independent artistic practice in the 1970s. The national museum’s retrospective in 2021 examined fifty years of this approach.

His imagery also encompasses cars. Autoportrait, presented at Galerie Indépendance in 2000, connected the automobile with freedom. In 2025, Passé, Présent, Futur brought together works from the bank’s collection and the artist’s own holdings at the same venue. These exhibitions set his exploration of painting’s means alongside the personal images that inform his work, linking material experimentation with subjects drawn from his own visual world.

This profile brings together identity references for Robert Brandy and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
