Вилли Якель

Born : 1888Died : 1944

Willy Jaeckel (1888–1944), born in Breslau, now Wrocław, was a German painter and printmaker associated with Expressionism. He trained in Breslau and Dresden before moving to Berlin in 1913. He joined the Berlin Secession in 1915. His work includes religious compositions, portraits, landscapes and floral still lifes, combining expressive intensity with a search for transparency and delicate colour effects.

The print portfolio Memento 1914/15, published in 1915, condemns the violence of war. Jaeckel also illustrated biblical and literary texts. Teaching in Berlin from 1925, he subsequently faced pressure under the Nazi regime, while several of his works were confiscated as “degenerate art”. He died during an air raid on Berlin in January 1944, after bombing had already destroyed his studio.
