Known as Edmond Hédouin, Pierre Edmond Alexandre Hédouin developed a career linking painting, printmaking and illustration. He trained in Paris with Paul Delaroche and Célestin Nanteuil and began exhibiting at the Salon in 1842. Rural scenes, markets and landscapes supplied much of his subject matter, while a journey to Constantine with Adolphe Leleux in 1847 introduced further North African settings. His practice extended from easel paintings to large decorative commissions, including work for the Théâtre-Français and Palais-Royal. In book illustration, he used etching to accompany texts as different as Manon Lescaut, Paul et Virginie and Rousseau’s Confessions. Movement between original compositions, engraved interpretation and printed narrative remained a connecting thread throughout his career.
