Alexander van Bredael was an Antwerp painter specialising in scenes of everyday life in his native city. He belonged to a family of artists; Jan Frans van Bredael the Elder was his son. His work as a teacher is documented by Peeter Snijers’s registration as his pupil in 1694–1695, recorded in the Rijksmuseum’s scholarly catalogue.
Cattle Market in Antwerp, signed and dated 1693 and held by the Bowes Museum, depicts the Ossenmarkt populated by numerous small figures. The collection entry identifies separate episodes: payment for a cow, residents observing transactions and cattle breaking loose. A chapel dedicated to the Virgin is among the local landmarks. The Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage also records a View of the Meir, documenting another prominent Antwerp square among his subjects.
This profile brings together identity references for Alexander van Bredael and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
