Alfred Joseph Casson, usually known by the initials A. J., built a career combining commercial design and painting. In Toronto, he worked alongside Franklin Carmichael from 1919, drawing closer through him to the Group of Seven. He joined the group in 1926. Long employed in the printing industry, he devoted himself entirely to painting after retiring from Sampson & Matthews in 1957.
His landscapes favour Ontario’s villages, farmland and forests, arranged in simplified forms and planes of light. White Pine, painted around 1957 and held by the McMichael Collection, belongs to this production of oils on canvas. Casson also supported other artists: serving on the Art Gallery of Ontario’s Acquisitions Committee, he helped bring contemporary Canadian works into the museum’s collection.
This profile brings together identity references for A. J. Casson and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
