Jean Leyssenne (1921–2009), whose origins lay in the Corrèze, pursued a military career and subsequently worked as an engineer while continuing to paint from his youth. Based in Antony from 1960, he participated in local artistic life and became a member of the Salon d’Automne, the Indépendants and the Artistes français. Travel associated with his earlier profession broadened his experience of landscapes and cities.
Watercolour held a privileged place in his work alongside gouache. Paris, Venice, Brittany and the Atlantic coast provided his principal subjects. He worked outdoors and returned to familiar sites to capture changes in light. Architecture and expanses of water thus supported an investigation attentive to the conditions of a particular moment. His practice remained rooted in direct experience and repeated observation of places.
This profile brings together identity references for Jean Leyssenne and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
