Frančeska Kirke trained in monumental painting at the Latvian Academy of Art. Her compositions reuse fragments of older artworks, bringing them into relation with the present. The Dance of the Militarists, from 1986, and The Cult of Personality, from 1988, participate in a political reflection shaped by changes in Latvian society.
In the project Trauslums/fragile, she intervenes within the collections of the Riga Bourse museum through painting, ceramics and sound. The project questions loss, memory and the museum’s apparent permanence. Her practice also includes designing coins. For Vilhelms Purvītis, issued in 2022, she adapts the Latvian painter’s Winter in colour on the coin’s obverse, transferring a historical image into an object on a small scale.
This profile brings together identity references for Frančeska Kirke and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
