Antun Motika

Born : 1902Died : 1992Documented citizenships : Croatia

Antun Motika was born in Pula in 1902 and died in Zagreb in 1992. He studied sculpture before turning to painting. He taught in Mostar and Zagreb while developing a practice attentive to light. My Studio, painted in Paris in 1931 and held by Zagreb’s National Museum of Modern Art, gives white a dominant place within an interior built from delicate colour relationships.

From the 1940s, Motika pursued parallel experiments with collage, photocollage, decalcomania, smoke and photographic processes. Organic matter and light effects extended his investigations beyond the canvas. His exhibition Arhajski nadrealizam in 1952 challenged the requirements of Socialist Realism. He also worked with glass and ceramics, maintaining a dialogue between painting and material experimentation across the different techniques within his varied artistic practice.

This profile brings together identity references for Antun Motika and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
