Hermann Emil Pohle was a painter associated with the Düsseldorf school. The son of landscape painter Hermann Pohle, he studied under Peter Janssen at the Düsseldorf Academy between 1889 and 1895. His work includes landscapes, historical subjects, portraits and monumental decoration. Werdegang der Schiene, a cycle of six large paintings for Düsseldorf’s Stahlhof, takes modern industry as its subject, including coke plants and blast furnaces. Pohle also played a part in local artistic life: from 1910 he chaired two artists’ associations and organised the major Düsseldorf exhibitions of 1911 and 1913. His paintings were also shown in Berlin, Dresden, Munich and Vienna.
