Petar Lubarda began his training in Belgrade before moving to Paris in 1926, where he continued studying independently in museums and galleries. Following a first solo exhibition in Rome, he worked in Belgrade before the war. Camp drawings and portraits of fellow prisoners bear witness to his captivity. After liberation, he helped establish an art school in Montenegro, later settling again in Belgrade. Montenegrin history and landscapes remained important sources for his work, encompassing battles, figures and natural settings. In the series Kragujevac 1941, made between 1966 and 1968, abstraction became a means of evoking the massacre. This connection between historical memory and pictorial transformation brought his subjects into a sustained exploration of painting’s expressive possibilities.
This profile brings together identity references for Petar Lubarda and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
