January Suchodolski, also known by the French name Janvier (1797–1875), was a Polish painter and lithographer born in Grodno. His initial training in drawing formed part of a military career, during which he already depicted soldiers, horses and fellow officers. After participating in the Polish uprising of 1830–1831, he pursued painting professionally. In Rome, he studied under Horace Vernet, whose example had a lasting influence on his battle scenes.
His work belongs to Polish Romantic painting, combining patriotic narratives, Napoleonic episodes, landscapes and genre subjects. Horses and groups of combatants frequently organise his compositions. The Battle of Raszyn (1832) and the Battle of Santo Domingo (1845) exemplify his interest in military history. His images offer pictorial and often idealised reconstructions of events, rather than direct eyewitness accounts of every episode.
