Born in Blois, Michel Maly (1936–2018) developed a figurative practice in which the city became the setting for scenes populated by numerous figures. Paris, New York, Venice and Florence informed his expressionist storytelling, rendered in thickly applied paint. The Bénézit entry connects his work with his training in Lyon and encounters with André Cottavoz, Jean Fusaro and Jacques Truphémus. His first exhibitions took place in 1959 in Geneva, introduced by the poet Alain Borne, and then in Lyon with Denise Mermillon. Awarded the Prix Fénéon in 1968, Maly continued to explore places and the activity within them. The exhibition “La Toscane et Venise”, presented in Paris in 2002, demonstrates the presence of Italian landscapes in his work.
