Jean Couty, a French painter born in Saint-Rambert-l’Île-Barbe in 1907 and who died in Lyon in 1991, initially trained in architecture. In 1925, he entered the class of Sainte-Marie Perrin and studied the discipline for eight years at the École des Beaux-Arts de Lyon and then in Paris. He exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris from 1935 to 1940; La Mère, completed in 1936 and shown at the Salon, was noted there by André Lhote.
The construction sites of the Lyon metro inspired Le Chantier du Métro, the painting with which Couty won the Grand Prix des Peintres Témoins de leur Temps. In 1971, the Maison de la Culture de Bourges presented a retrospective of his work. In 2017, his son Charles opened a museum in his honour in Saint-Rambert, on the banks of the Saône.
