György Ruttkay

Born : 1898Died : 1974Documented citizenships : Hungary

Gyorgy Ruttkay (1898–1974) combined law and painting for much of his career. The biography published by Invaluable describes artistic training in Hungary from 1920, followed by a period in Berlin in 1922. After obtaining a law degree in 1926, he practised in Gönc, Szikszó and Kassa. In 1939, he joined the fine arts department of the Kazinczy Society in Košice, becoming its president. His move to Miskolc in 1950 marked a subsequent dedication to fine art. The same source links his compositions of squares and diagonals to his discovery of the Russian avant-garde. Between 1958 and 1963, he produced ninety-nine watercolours devoted to Dante, bringing together pictorial exploration and literary reference.

This profile brings together identity references for György Ruttkay and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
