Hendrik Martenszoon Sorgh

Died : 1670

Hendrick Martensz Sorgh worked in Rotterdam, becoming a master of the Guild of Saint Luke around 1636–1637 and its head in 1669. The son of a boatman, he also practised that occupation alongside painting. His peasant interiors, kitchens and taverns accompanied market scenes, while his repertoire extended to portraits, seascapes and history paintings.

The Vegetable Market in the Rijksmuseum, signed and dated 1664, brings two women and a man together beside a well-stocked stall. A young woman holds a calabash; cabbages, carrots, turnips, artichokes and squashes give the goods a specific physical presence. Interior of a Farmhouse at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, painted on a wooden panel around 1640, represents the domestic and rural counterpart to this observation of everyday life in a public marketplace.

This profile brings together identity references for Hendrik Martenszoon Sorgh and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
