Domenico Morelli

Born : 1823Died : 1901

Domenico Morelli occupies an important place in nineteenth-century Neapolitan painting. His work combines historical and religious subjects with an Orientalist imagination. The Iconoclasts, exhibited in 1855 and preserved at Capodimonte, marked his public emergence and the development of a history painting concerned with plausible figures and situations.

This exploration evolved into compositions where strong colour and dramatic effects became increasingly important. His religious repertoire sometimes favours a concentrated image, as in Saint Leonard at Rufina, where secondary elements are reduced. Other aspects of his work explore the suggestiveness of the sketch and a spirituality associated with Christian and Mediterranean subjects. Morelli also participated in the artistic life of Naples: together with Filippo Palizzi, he helped establish the Museo Artistico Industriale.

This profile brings together identity references for Domenico Morelli and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
