Arthur Köpcke (1928–1977), born in Hamburg and deceased in Copenhagen, developed a practice combining literature, painting, objects, collages and actions. In the late 1950s he opened a gallery in Copenhagen with his wife Aase. It became an important meeting place for the international avant-garde, exhibiting Niki de Saint Phalle, Robert Filliou and Dieter Roth, among others.
From 1962, Köpcke organised and participated in Fluxus events. His reading/work-pieces combine texts, images and instructions, inviting readers to perform or imagine actions. His rolled paintings could also be used in performances. This movement between reading, looking and doing turns the work into a proposition to be activated. ARoS in Aarhus preserves his archive, including correspondence, gallery documents and a substantial collection of reading pieces.
This profile brings together identity references for Arthur Köpcke and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
