Jacopo Fabris (1689–1761) linked Venetian painting with the stages of northern Europe. His activity extended beyond easel pictures: theatrical scenery and stage arrangements occupied a major place in his career. Employed in Karlsruhe, he subsequently worked in Hamburg before continuing at northern courts, including in Denmark. His paintings explored architecture and urban views alongside this theatrical practice. The BBVA collection identifies connections with Canaletto’s compositions without establishing a direct pupil–teacher relationship. In his architectural capriccios, real elements are incorporated into imaginary spaces. A view of the Grand Canal and Rialto published under his name recalls this other aspect of his output, closely related in subject to his work for the stage.
