Axel Jarl (1871–1950) was a Danish painter born in Copenhagen, previously known by the surname Jørgensen. After studying theology, he turned towards art and lived in Paris, attending the Académie Julian in 1905–1906. His travels provided subjects for portraits, scenes of everyday life, architectural views and landscapes, bringing several different kinds of imagery into his practice.
His work also included decorative schemes for Løndal and for his own property at Strødam. Dissatisfied with his results, he stopped painting around 1920 while continuing his involvement with cultural heritage. The Thorvaldsens Museum’s report for 1932–1933 lists him among donors of books, images and other material. This record documents a continuing connection with the art world after his own period of artistic production had ended.
This profile brings together identity references for Axel Jarl and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
