Elias Al-Zayat, also known as Elias Zayat or Zayyat, was born in Damascus in 1935 and died there in 2022. After training with Michel Kurcheh and studying in Sofia and Cairo, he pursued restoration studies in Budapest. A painter and teacher, he contributed to artistic education in Syria, particularly at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Damascus, alongside other figures of Syrian modernism.
His compositions bring Christian heritage and regional iconography into dialogue with contemporary concerns. Expressive eyes and figures informed by icon painting recur without restricting his art to a religious function. Faces, from 1968, belongs to Mathaf; Village Sunrise, from 1989, is in the Jordan National Gallery. Restoring inherited images, reflecting on history and inventing new pictorial forms consequently emerge as complementary activities within his practice.
This profile brings together identity references for Elias Al-Zayat and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
