A Belgian or Russian-Belgian artist of Ukrainian origin, Ania Staritsky moves across several fields of artistic practice: after painting figurative portraits in Brussels, she breaks with figuration in Paris and turns to abstraction. She settles in Brussels in 1932 and works there until 1940 as an advertising artist, illustrator and designer, while completing her training at the Higher Institute of Decorative Arts of La Cambre. In 1941, she meets Guillaume Hoorickx, known as Bill Orix; both are arrested by the Gestapo in 1942. After the war, she settles in France with Hoorickx, first in Nice and then in Paris, where she establishes her permanent home in 1952. She takes part in the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles, where she exhibits from 1951 to 1956.
Her abstract work combines, among other things, the practice of collage, using crumpled paper, wood or stones, with an interest in wood engraving and lithography, which she takes an interest in from the 1960s onwards. Book illustration also remains part of her practice: in 1947, she illustrates, among other works, The Queen of Spades by Alexander Pushkin, and in 1950, three volumes of Ronsard’s Amours. She also collaborates on artists’ books with poets such as Michel Butor, Eugène Guillevic and Pierre-Albert Birot.
Among the documented solo exhibitions are those at Galerie Numaga in Auvernier-Neuchâtel in 1967 and Galerie Melisa in Lausanne in 1976. In 1989, a donation of her paintings is made to the Musée de Grenoble. More recently, the Manoir des livres devoted the exhibition “Ania Staritsky, ‘L’éclat d’un œil’” to her work. It was presented from 28 October 2023 to 24 February 2024 and included, among other things, artists’ books, maquettes and prints.
