David Vinckboons

Trained by his father Philippe, David Vinckboons settled with his family in Amsterdam around 1591. His work combines landscape and genre painting: peasant celebrations, gatherings in the gardens of patrician houses and tavern scenes appear alongside religious subjects. Landscape thus provides a setting for varied activities and narratives. Drawings, sometimes intended as designs for engravings, also form an important part of his output. Some address tensions between peasants and soldiers. His paintings include Travellers Attacked by Robbers (1603), held by the fine arts museum in Nantes, and The Carrying of the Cross (1611), in Munich’s Alte Pinakothek. A Peasant Feast, also known as Kermesse, belongs to the collection of the fine arts museum in Quimper.

This profile brings together identity references for David Vinckboons and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
