Marian Szpakowski (1926–1983) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków and settled in Zielona Góra in 1954. A painter, printmaker and maker of reliefs, he founded the Krąg group in 1960. His individual practice developed alongside collective exhibition work and the exchange of artistic ideas.
As initiator of the Złote Grono exhibitions and symposiums, held from 1963 to 1981, he helped establish contemporary art within his city. His practice turned towards geometric abstraction around 1965. Kompozycja I from the 65–66 cycle (1966) and Relief czerwony (1969), in the Museum of the Lubusz Region, mark this direction. Forms, visual weight and illusions of depth connect painting and relief in this exploration of pictorial space.
This profile brings together identity references for Marian Szpakowski and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
