Juliusz Joniak (1925–2021) was a Polish painter and printmaker born in Lwów, now Lviv. After beginning his artistic education there, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, including painting with Czesław Rzepiński and printmaking with Konrad Srzednicki. He subsequently taught at the same institution. A visit to Paris in 1957 strengthened his engagement with modern French painting and its treatment of colour and form.
Drawing on Polish colourism, Joniak constructed pictures through colour relationships, initially combined with geometric structures. His Windows and Kaleidoscopes series exemplify this approach. From the late 1970s his handling became increasingly free. Travels in France, Italy and Spain inspired landscapes and still lifes, while encounters with paintings by earlier European masters prompted independent reinterpretations of their compositions.
This profile brings together identity references for Juliusz Joniak and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
