Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek (1778–1851), born in Veere, was a Dutch marine painter and the founder of an important artistic dynasty. Trained in Middelburg by Thomas Gaal as a decorative painter, he turned to ships, harbours and coastal scenes. After living in Middelburg and Durgerdam, he settled in Amsterdam in 1833.
His paintings combine close knowledge of navigation with delicate colours and meticulous descriptions of vessels. Shipwrecks, harbour entrances and boats arriving or departing became favourite subjects. His topographical drawings also document the destruction of Vlissingen and Veere in 1809. He taught his sons, including Barend Cornelis and Hermanus, who carried the Koekkoek name into nineteenth-century painting while establishing independent careers within the family’s broader artistic tradition.
This profile brings together identity references for Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
