Dóra Maurer (1937–2026), born in Budapest, was a Hungarian artist whose practice combined printmaking, photography, film and painting. Trained in printmaking, she investigated displacement, repetition and compositional rules. Photographic sequences break gestures into phases and rearrange their order. An apparently simple procedure becomes a way of examining how visual meaning is constructed through relationships between images.
From the 1970s, Maurer also developed paintings based on geometric systems and variations in viewpoint. Colours and planes shift, sometimes across shaped canvases. Experimental teaching played an important role in her career, notably through her work with Miklós Erdély. Balancing precise method and play, she pursued a process rather than a final image: each transformation makes further possibilities visible and invites attention to the conditions of perception.
