Daniel Maclise’s career brings together painting, portraiture and illustration: early in his career, he works for a bank alongside the collector and amateur sculptor George Newenham, while the literary circles into which Thomas Crofton Croker introduces him bring him commissions for illustrations. A portrait of Walter Scott made in 1825 contributes to his popularity in Cork. Arriving in London on 18 July 1827, he enters the Royal Academy as a probationary student, before being admitted as a full student on 20 April 1828. There he receives a silver medal in 1829 for his drawings of antiquities, followed by a gold medal in 1831 for The Choice of Hercules, now listed as being in a private collection.
A close associate of William Maginn, editor of Fraser’s Magazine, Maclise publishes numerous drawings of political figures and celebrities there between 1830 and 1836. He also illustrates four Christmas stories by Charles Dickens. This group of drawings is published in a volume in 1873 under the title The Maclise Portrait-Gallery. Elected a member of the Royal Academy on 10 February 1840, he declines the offer to become its president in 1865.
From 1858, he undertakes a composition at the Palace of Westminster devoted to the meeting of Wellington and Blücher at Waterloo, and then creates a work of the same dimensions on La mort de Nelson. The Earls of Ormond and Desmond, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1870, is described as his last painting.
