Shōichi Hasegawa

Born : 1929Died : 2023Documented citizenships : Japan

The Japanese painter and printmaker Shōichi Hasegawa (1929–2023) developed an abstract body of work that brings together East Asian calligraphy, the traditional symbolism of forms and colours, and new Western modes of expression. The notice on his work describes coloured backgrounds termed “Tachist”, traversed by decorative graphic motifs engraved in white and rooted in the tradition of Japanese popular imagery.

Born in Yaizu, in Shizuoka Prefecture, he studied at the Kokuga Institute in Tokyo. After arriving in Paris in 1961, he was introduced to printmaking at Stanley William Hayter’s Atelier 17. In 1968, he received the First Prize for Printmaking at the International Exhibition of Como. His solo exhibitions are recorded, among other places, in Tokyo in 1957, 1959, 1961, 1979 and 1986, and in Paris in 1964, 1968, 1972, 1978, 1980 and 1981.

Works by Hasegawa are held in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec. In 1987, a book by Patrick-Gilles Persin devoted to the artist was published in Frankfurt; it includes a catalogue raisonné of his prints. Hasegawa died in Paris on 22 February 2023.
