István Nyári, born in Budapest in 1952, graduated in advertising graphics from the Hungarian College of Applied Arts in 1977. He began making fine art in 1978 while also designing record sleeves and visual projects for music and cinema. His early paintings feature hyperrealistic rendering and montage-like combinations of motifs.
His interests later shifted towards relationships between kitsch and fine art, explored through painting, reliefs and object assemblages. He identifies primarily as a pop-surrealist artist with an interest in the Lowbrow movement. Cinematic figures, science fiction and absurd situations populate his detailed imagery. Awarded the Munkácsy Prize in 2009, he received a solo exhibition at Kunsthalle Budapest in 2016, extending the institutional presentation of his work.
