Georg Martin Ignaz Raab was born in Vienna in 1821 and died there in 1885. He worked as a portraitist using a variety of supports. His drawing of a girl in three-quarter profile facing left, dated 1847 and preserved at the Albertina, is executed in ink. The close framing and turn of the face focus attention on the individual appearance of the sitter, whose name is not specified.
The same collection holds a miniature of Archduke Rudolf as a small child, painted in watercolour on ivory in 1860: a white dress stands against a blue-green background. Raab instead used oil on canvas for his 1874 portrait of Emperor Franz Joseph I, held by the Belvedere. These works bring together graphic study, intimate princely portraiture and a painted imperial likeness.
This profile brings together identity references for Georg Raab and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
