Born in Port-au-Prince in 1942, Lyonel Laurenceau studied in Haiti, the United States and France before settling in Montreal. Human character inspires painting in which portraiture, particularly the depiction of children, occupies an important place. Associated with symbolic expressionism, his approach organises pictorial space into overlapping cells whose transparency brings forms into relation. This construction of the image accompanies his attention to the figure and its expressive presence. Documented works also show his use of acrylic on canvas. His career includes exhibitions in the United States, Canada, the Dominican Republic and Colombia. The circulation of his work thus connects different parts of the Americas through an artistic trajectory that began in Haiti.
This profile brings together identity references for Lyonel Laurenceau and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
