Wilhelm Busch (1832–1908), born in Wiedensahl, abandoned mechanical engineering studies to train at the academies of Düsseldorf, Antwerp and Munich. From 1858 he contributed to Fliegende Blätter and Münchener Bilderbogen. Max und Moritz, published in 1865, established his reputation for picture stories combining drawing, narrative rhythm and satire.
This fame represents only part of his activity. Busch also painted and wrote poetry and prose, including Eduards Traum in 1891. Following periods in Munich and Frankfurt, he returned to Wiedensahl in 1872, then settled in Mechtshausen in 1898. His Antwerp studies had introduced him to the old Dutch masters. Hannover’s Wilhelm Busch Museum preserves a major body of his work, bringing the humorous draughtsman into relation with the painter and writer.
This profile brings together identity references for Wilhelm Busch and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
