Remigio Cantagallina, a draughtsman and etcher from Sansepolcro, worked notably in Florence. His earliest documented landscape etchings date from 1603. His activity also accompanied princely festivities: Asterion belongs to the Vessels of the Argonauts, etched in 1608 for the wedding celebrations of Cosimo de’ Medici in Florence. The print thus preserves an aspect of this temporary spectacle.
His drawings also demonstrate attention to particular places. The Artist at Work before Anderlecht, dated 4 March 1612, combines brown pen and wash over black and red chalk. The festive compositions continued to circulate after his death: a reversed copy of Asterion, published by Jean Sauvé in 1664, follows Cantagallina and Giulio Parigi. This anonymous sheet must be distinguished from the original etching.
This profile brings together identity references for Remigio Cantagallina and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
