Christian Gottlob Hammer combined drawing in sepia, watercolour and gouache with the practice of etching and engraving. His subjects are primarily landscapes and city views, particularly in Saxony and around Dresden; his travels also took him to Bohemia, notably Karlsbad and Teplitz, as well as to Silesia. He was among the first painters to depict the landscapes of the Spreewald.
Trained at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts from 1794, Hammer became a master student of Johann Philipp Veith four years later. He was a member of the Academy from 1816 and was appointed extraordinary professor in 1829. During his stay in Dresden in 1810, Goethe visited him in his studio.
His drawings also record architectural transformations: for Hermann Rochus zu Lynar, he depicted the old Lübbenau Castle before its demolition in 1818, then documented several stages in the construction of the new castle up to 1820. A series of his works is held at the Albertina in Vienna, where it entered the collection through acquisitions by Duke Albert of Saxe-Teschen.
This profile brings together identity references for Christian Gottlob Hammer and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
