Charles Napier Hemy devoted much of his painting to the sea, ships and the work of fishermen. Trained at Newcastle’s drawing school, he settled in Falmouth in the early 1880s. His early landscapes show the influence of Pre-Raphaelitism; precise draughtsmanship remained important even as his brushwork grew freer. He worked in both oil and watercolour.
To observe boats and waves from the water, he used floating studios: the former fishing boat Van der Velde and later the yacht Van der Meer. Studies and sketches prepared his marine compositions. How We Caught the Pilchards, held by the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, depicts the work of the fishing community. A study for Pilchards is also preserved in the collections at Falmouth.
