The German painter and illustrator Carl Johann Rabus published his work in several periodicals, including Eulenspiegel, Der Orchideengarten and Jugend. This publishing activity, carried out in Berlin from 1923 to 1927, is an important point of reference in his documented career.
After the Nazis came to power in Germany in 1933, Rabus settled in Vienna, where he met Erna Adler, a Jewish photographer, whom he married in 1944. The couple subsequently fled to Brussels. Arrested in Belgium in 1940, they met different fates: Adler was released, while Rabus was detained at the Saint-Cyprien camp in southern France. After escaping in 1941, he returned to Brussels; arrested again in 1943 on the charge of “Rassenschande”, he was deported and spent some time in Vienna’s municipal prison. After the war, the couple lived in Essen, Munich and Brussels before settling in Murnau am Staffelsee in 1974. Rabus died there on 28 July 1983.
A sales listing also mentions Landschaftspartie, a watercolour measuring 34 × 55 cm, described as signed on the reverse.
This profile brings together identity references for Carl Rabus and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
