René Bértholo (1935–2005) developed a practice encompassing painting, sculpture and printmaking. Trained in Lisbon, he first contributed to the magazine Ver, then settled in Paris in 1958 after spending time in Munich with Lourdes Castro. He participated in the collective venture KWY, whose magazine brought Portuguese artists together with Christo and Jan Voss. His drawings and monotypes of 1961 explored the accumulation and dispersal of images. From 1966, the moving objects he called “reduced models” opened another field of investigation. Participation in Mythologies Quotidiennes in Paris in 1964 connected his work with debates about contemporary imagery. Returning to Portugal in 1981, he settled in the Algarve. The Serralves Museum devoted a retrospective to him in 2000.
This profile brings together identity references for René Bértholo and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
