After initial training in agriculture, Hans Olde studied painting in Munich and Paris. His landscapes, portraits and rural scenes pay particular attention to light, informed by Impressionism. Cows of 1888, at the Kunsthalle zu Kiel, bears an inscription locating its execution in Seekamp. This oil on canvas, over a metre high, belongs to the animal subjects within his output.
Olde combined artistic production with teaching: he directed the Weimar art school from 1902 and the Kassel academy from 1911. His prints appeared in the journal Pan, including a portrait of Friedrich Nietzsche. LACMA holds an etched likeness of the philosopher dated around 1900: an impression on wove paper from a plate measuring approximately 18 by 13 centimetres.
This profile brings together identity references for Hans Olde and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
