Eduardo Luiz (1932–1988), born in Braga and deceased in Paris, received his first drawing lessons from his father, the sculptor Joaquim Fernandes Gomes. He continued his training in Porto at its decorative arts and fine arts schools. In 1953, he received a young painting award and participated in the São Paulo Biennial. A Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation grant enabled him to settle in Paris in 1958.
His activities extended beyond painting: he designed sets for Porto’s experimental theatre and illustrations for cinema. His first Paris solo exhibition took place at Galerie Mouffe in 1963. Melancolia, Pot au Feu and Les femmes invisibles are held by MACAM. The Gulbenkian Foundation presented retrospectives in Lisbon and Paris in 1990.
This profile brings together identity references for Eduardo Luiz and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
