Tove Jansson (1914–2001) was a Swedish-speaking Finnish artist and writer born into an artistic family in Helsinki. Painting, illustration, caricature and comics held complementary places within her practice. Self-portraits, landscapes and still lifes reveal a sustained exploration of colour and composition. She also produced satirical drawings for the magazine Garm, expressing clear opposition to war and authoritarian rule. Different media allowed her to address both personal experience and the events unfolding around her.
The Moomins brought her visual imagination together with writing. Alongside them, Jansson developed a substantial practice of mural painting for shared spaces. Party in the Countryside and Party in the City, made in 1947, unite figures, movement and sociability. Her work crosses scales from printed page to wall, maintaining a dialogue between lived experience and narrative invention.
